The Canadian Art Inspiration Student Challenge

We'd like to recognize three Visual Art students for their hard work, creativity and passion. These students chose to take on the Canadian Art Inspiration Student Challenge, going beyond their regular coursework to explore the work of Canadian artists and create original pieces inspired by them.

Working closely with their teacher, they challenged themselves to learn new techniques, express ideas that were meaningful to them and create artwork they could be proud of. Their dedication and creativity resulted in beautiful pieces that both reflected their own artistic voices and paid tribute to Canadian art.

Abstract landscape painting

Maddie's painting was inspired by a family trip to Banff with her mom and brother to see the mountains and by artist Kazuo Nakamura and his abstract landscape style.

Maddie incorporated geometric shapes and one-point perspective into her artwork. She used cylinders to create the mountains, triangles for the trees, and rhombuses for the leaves.

Creating the piece allowed Maddie to relive the excitement and memories of her family trip to the mountains.

.
Arrow Lake

Arrow lake is special to Sask DLC student, Kaydence, because it reflects the nostalgia she feels for the lake days she experienced in British Columbia.

The Canadian nature throughout the scene represents home to her. She wanted to capture the power, movement and energy of Canadian wilderness. The sky is filled with textured clouds in warm tones, contrasted by a vivid cerulean blue lake and strong pine trees painted with bold brushstrokes. She wanted to show nature, not as something still, but as something constantly moving.

Inspired by Tom Thomson she focused and brighter colours like in his painting, “The West Wind”. She choose not to include animals or people allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the raw beauty of Canadian land like Tom Thomson did. She hopes the viewers feel both the beauty of Canada and the importance of preserving its wild spaces.

.
Oils on Linen

Kaitlyn created a painting with oils on linen. She enjoys oil paints and wanted to use them to be inspired by the landscape work of Tom Thomson.

This is a style of landscape she had never tried before but she felt like she was able to learn more about toning a canvas, mixing in different mediums and better improve her oil painting techniques.

The painting is a depiction of a location she visited with her family.
